What I’m Reading

I finished PARTIALS by Dan Wells and loved it. It definitely has a different feel than other dystopian novels I’ve read. It’s got more of a sci-fi story arc and lots of good action. But the second book is going to have to wait because I have started DREAMS OF GODS AND MONSTERS by Laini Taylor! I have been waiting for this book! It is as awesome as I thought it would be. I am also critiquing a great MS!

What I’m Writing

THE WITCH OF HIGHLAND FALLS is heading off to four wonderful beta readers. Thank you all so much! I’m so excited to get some constructive critiques that I know will help make the story the best it can be. And I can’t wait to share this story with the rest of the world. I really love the story and the characters so very much. I’ve gotten a lot done on the outline for my next MS. I’m tentatively going to call it FALLING because I’m sick of calling it “my next MS.” That will have to be the title until I come up with something better. I’ve messed around with variations of FALLING but there are a lot of similar titles out there. So it’s time to put my thinkin’ cap on. (I suck at titles!) Hoping to start actually writing on the first draft this week. Yay!

What Inspires Me Right Now

Last week, I checked out every single blog link from the WUW links on Jaime’s and Erin’s pages and left a comment on every one. I’ve always wanted to do that. :) It was awesome to visit some blogs I never have been to before and “meet” new people. It was very extroverted of me (go me!). I wish I had the time to do that every week – it took a while! It’s such a great group of bloggers. You all inspire the heck out of me!

What Else I’ve Been Up To

On Monday, when listing my goals for the week as part of the YA Buccaneers Spring Writing Boot Camp, in addition to my writing goals, I listed an exercise goal that included beginning some strength training this week. I asked a friend of mine (who is a fitness instructor) what I should start on. I ended up going to her Group Strength Training class yesterday afternoon. Oh. My. Lord. I had the lightest set of weights there and I still can barely lift my arms today. Ooof. But at the same time, it was fun and a challenge and I’m totally going again next week! Hopefully I can lift my arms again by then. :)

So, what’s up with you?

YAB-Spring-LargeThe YA Buccaneers Spring Writing Bootcamp continues to inspire and motivate. Thanks mateys! :)

My goals for the last week were:

  • Finish this round of revisions on THE WITCH OF HIGLAND FALLS.  DONE! Yay! And I’ve got a handful of beta readers lined up which is so wonderful.
  • If I get the first goal finished – get TWoHF document ready for beta readers – make it purty! I haven’t quite gotten the formatting finished. This should not take long, though. I have high hopes for this next week. :)
  • Do some more tweaking on the outline of the next MS. Start on character profiles. Some of my characters don’t even have names yet! But I can see them all in my head. I did a little of this last week but not as much as I’d like.
  • And, finally, the non-writing goal… let’s aim for five days of exercise again (with two of those days running), okey doke? Once again – I got pretty darn close on this. Exercised four days but no running. My problem is that I have a hard time talking myself into running because I can read while I’m on any machine at the rec center – but I can’t read while running. :)

Goals for this week:

  • Get TWoHF formatted and sent to beta readers.
  • Finish tweaking the outline of my next story, coming up with a working title so I can stop calling it “my next story” and START WRITING!
  • Get a good chunk of beta reading for others done.
  • This week’s exercise goal? Work out five days – aiming for one day of running and two days of strength training. I keep seeing articles popping up lately about how important strength training is that is something I’ve really ignored (I also can’t read while doing that!).

How are your spring writing goals going? Have a great week! Team V

WUWTreeJoin the fun on your own blog and then go to Jaime’s or Erin’s to add your link – it’s a great way to share what’s going on in your life and get to know other bloggers! What I’m Reading I read IGNITE ME by Tahereh Mafi last week and it was a satisfying ending to the series. Then I started on PARTIALS by Dan Wells. I would think that pretty soon, I would get sick of the dystopian books. But, not this week, I guess! I’m really liking PARTIALS so far. Also DREAMS OF GODS AND MONSTERS by Laini Taylor showed up on my Kindle yesterday! Eeeek! I’m so excited to read this. But I’m sorta neurotic about finishing one book before starting another (unless I’m not enjoying that first book) so I’ll have to finish PARTIALS first. I also finished critiquing one MS and just got another one to critique! I’m psyched to dig into it. What I’m Writing I will definitely have THE WITCH OF HIGHLAND FALLS ready for beta readers within the next couple weeks. I completed the following synopsis last week – please let me know if you would be interested in beta reading and/or swapping MS’s to beta!

Tig knows her talents are becoming stronger. Changing. She knows there are only a couple people she trusts and who trust her. What she doesn’t know is that someone wants her abilities – her very blood – for their own perverse needs. What she doesn’t know might get her killed. Tig Gunderson grew up in a perfectly normal family in a small, upper-midwest town. Perfectly normal if trying to move things with your mind were considered normal. The kind of thing that will get you labeled “crazy” in any town. Her mother has become a shell of a person; her brother, an absentee dating machine; and her father, a ghost. Her best friend Marty is the only person helping her hold it together until her abilities start to frighten even herself. When a stranger in town presents a mystery that ties directly back to her quirky family, she’ll leave everyone in Highland Falls behind to follow a clue and an enigmatic boy named Alec who knows more than he’s saying.

What Inspires Me Right Now Oh, just the wonderful world around me. Sunny days and the ridding of winter jackets and spring musical performances at school and YOU. Yes, you. This whole wonderful writing community that continues to inspire me more and more each week! What Else I’ve Been Up To Sadly, not much. Kid activities keep happening and happening and happening. I’m looking forward to the summer for a slower pace! So, what’s up with you?

YAB-Spring-LargeThe YA Buccaneers Spring Writing Bootcamp is going strong in its second of three months. I feel like I did pretty well with my goals this week, even if I didn’t totally complete all of them. :)

My goals for the last week were:

  • Finish the current round of revisions on TWoHF (yes, FINISH – woo!)  Okay, I was a little premature on my “woo!” there… I did make some progress but I’m not quite finished.
  • Write a synopsis of TWoHF so I can hopefully entice a couple more people to beta read it. :) Finished! And I’m very excited to share but I’m going to save it for this week’s “What’s Up Wednesday.”
  • Finish my critique of a MS that I mostly finished last weekend but I wanted to scan through it again to make sure I’ve hit everything I was asked to look for and write an overall summary. Finished! I was so pleased to read this awesome story and I can’t wait until the rest of the world gets to read it too!
  • Start drafting an outline for my next WIP. I’m so excited! This story has been rattling around in my head for more than a year. Yes! I got a really great start on this.
  • One non-writing goal: work out at least five days (including two days of running). I have slacked off terribly in recent weeks. I need to get back on track!! Oh, so very close. I worked out four days and one of those days was running. Better than nothin’, right?!

Goals for the next week include:

  • Finish this round of revisions on THE WITCH OF HIGLAND FALLS. I’m going to reserve my “woo!” until next week to see if I actually reach this goal this time. :)
  • If I get the first goal finished – get TWoHF document ready for beta readers – make it purty!
  • Do some more tweaking on the outline of the next MS. Start on character profiles. Some of my characters don’t even have names yet! But I can see them all in my head.
  • And, finally, the non-writing goal… let’s aim for five days of exercise again (with two of those days running), okey doke?

What I’m Reading I finished up SERAPHINA by Rachel Hartman just in the nick of time before the digital library loan ended and it was snatched back from my Kindle! :) It was a really great book. I sound like a broken record but the rich language and the wonderful world-building in this book really made it a fantastic read. After that I started on IGNITE ME by Tahareh Mafi. Even though it hasn’t been that long since I read the first two books in this series, I had to go rely on Recaptains to remind myself what had happened! (Side note: what a great idea for a blog. My memory is terrible and even though I am not opposed to re-reading a book to get caught up before I read the next in the series… there’s just too many good books out there waiting to be read for me to be re-reading all the time!)

What I’m Writing

The YA Buccaneers Spring Writing Boot Camp is now in its second month and has really helped move my writing goals along. Thanks, mateys! I’ve continued revising THE WITCH OF HIGHLAND FALLS and am just about ready to send out to CPs! Yay! I hope to have a synopsis of the story to share here next week.

I’ve also started drafting an outline of my next MS. Um, minor problem there. I’ve been thinking about this story for a long time but I guess the end has always been a little muddy. When I started jotting down a loose outline, I realized I have two different, distinct ways that I see this ending. And I’m not sure which I like better. And this is NOT supposed to be a Choose Your Own Adventure story! D’oh! I’ll keep doodling on that outline until one or the other ending rises to the surface. :)

What Else I’ve Been Up To

Oh, all the usual kid stuff: getting ready for spring dance shows, spring choir concerts, spring band concerts… My older daughter and four of her friends have been practicing for an upcoming performance at a local fundraiser for the Music Boosters. They are singing a medley of two songs from Mulan: Honor to Us All and I’ll Make a Man Out of You. They’ve been practicing in my basement. Guess what songs I will NEVER get out of my head again. Here… share my earworm/misery (you’re welcome)…

So, what’s up with you?

YAB-Spring-LargeThe YA Buccaneers Spring Writing Bootcamp kicks off its second month tomorrow and, thanks to this wonderful initiative, I think I’m actually ahead of my goals at the moment. (I say that with hesitancy because it seems too good to be true.) I have spent the last week continuing with revisions to my MS – THE WITCH OF HIGHLAND FALLS. In the next week, my goals are:

  • Finish the current round of revisions on TWoHF (yes, FINISH – woo!)
  • Write a synopsis of TWoHF so I can hopefully entice a couple more people to beta read it. :)
  • Finish my critique of a MS that I mostly finished last weekend but I wanted to scan through it again to make sure I’ve hit everything I was asked to look for and write an overall summary.
  • Start drafting an outline for my next WIP. I’m so excited! This story has been rattling around in my head for more than a year.
  • One non-writing goal: work out at least five days (including two days of running). I have slacked off terribly in recent weeks. I need to get back on track!!

WUWTreeJoin the fun on your own blog and then go to Jaime’s or Erin’s to add your link – it’s a great way to share what’s going on in your life and get to know other bloggers! What I’m Reading I devoted the majority of last weekend to beta reading and LOVING IT! I am also still reading SERAPHINA by Rachel Hartman but I fear I may not get it done before my digital library loan runs out. Yikes! A co-worker told me to make sure and turn off the wifi on my Kindle and then they can’t take the book back until I turn the wifi back on. I’m not sure I’m that desperate! Lol! I am still really loving the book, though. It’s just not a quick, easy read. What I’m Writing My revisions on THE WITCH OF HIGHLAND FALLS suffered a little late last week but I’ve gotten back into the groove early this week. Honestly, I’m at the point with this MS that I have reviewed it so many times I can hardly look at it any more. Time to send it along to some fresh eyes, I think! Soon. Very soon. What Inspires Me Right Now The birds are back! YAY! I so love hearing the birds sing away outside my window in the morning. Although, they probably don’t love having to find their water around the edges of still-icy puddles! Hang in there, birds. It’s gotta warm up soon! OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   What Else I’ve Been Up To This also kind of belongs under the “inspiring” heading… I recently read this blog post on Zen Habits all about trying to simplify your life so as to focus on one big project (or a couple big projects). He writes about several other projects or activities that he has given up or put aside (and how painful that is!) so as to focus on writing a book. It has gotten me thinking about what I could give up so as to make more time for writing. I’ve never been a very structured person and the older I get, the more I realize that it’s pretty darn hard to get anything done without good structure and discipline. My month without TV has certainly been beneficial. What other changes could I make? In the next couple weeks, I’m going to try to track where all my time goes every day to see what I might be able to give up in order to make more time for writing. So, what’s up with you?

Winter is on its way out (finally). Though it’s been a tough one, there has been plenty of beauty to be found, as well. Here is one last blast of winter in all its icy glory.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Have a wonderful weekend!

What I’m Reading

I finished ACROSS A STAR-SWEPT SEA by Diana Peterfreund and loved it! I wanted to go directly to more of her books, but also wanted to jump into SERAPHINA by Rachel Hartman. Partly because it sounds awesome and partly because it’s been sitting on my Kindle as a library e-loan and I need to get going on it before the loan expires! I’m really liking SERAPHINA. It’s a complex “world” so it was a little more challenging to get into. But, wow, the rich literary style Hartman writes in and her amazing world building! I love it!

What I’m Writing

The YA Buccaneers Spring Writing Boot Camp has helped kick me into gear this week with revisions on my WIP. I wrote a brief update on Monday which essentially boils down to: March and April I will finish up revisions on THE WITCH OF HIGHLAND FALLS  and in May I’ll send that off to CPs and jump into the first draft of a new MS. Yay!!

What Inspires Me Right Now

Here’s what inspires me: SUN! Warmer temperatures! Going outside without putting on 10 layers of clothes. Lakes of melted snow on the sidewalks and streets! Birds and birdsong! Muddy boots, shoes and doggie paws! SPRING!!!!!! (And exclamation marks, evidently!)

What Else I’ve Been Up To

My month without TV has been key to meeting any kind of writing goals at all recently, since “real life” kind of stuff has been keeping me so busy. If I wasn’t actively trying to stay away from TV and Netflix, etc., I would very easily fall back on that stuff whenever I have down time just to do some quality “zoning out” and de-stressing. I’m finding that sitting down to write (or read if I just can’t make myself write/revise), is a whole different kind of de-stressing and I don’t need the TV to fill that need. I hope I can keep this up past the month of March!

So, what’s up with you?

YAB-Spring-LargeThe YA Buccaneers Spring Writing Boot Camp is going to be a fantastic way to kick my revisions into high gear – I can feel it in my bones! Proof, you say? You want proof? Despite this last week being crazy busy, I managed to sit down to do revisions of some length or another nearly every day. And it’s because I know I’ve got a whole team who’s got my back and who will check in on me every so often on Twitter. In fact, this week was a good time to crystalize my goals for the March, April, May Boot Camp. Revisions will take up the bulk of my time during March and April. By the end of April, I want to be ready to send this MS (THE WITCH OF HIGHLAND FALLS) out to anyone who’s willing to beta. Also during March and April, I will take some time to start outlining the next story that’s been rambling around in my head and in May I’ll start the first draft. I’m so excited! Once again, thanks to the folks over at YA Buccaneers for this wonderful Spring Writing Boot Camp. And go Team Vesuvius! Team V If you are participating, how is Boot Camp going for you? If not, how are your writing goals in general treating you?
